Do not let this overwhelm you

However bad you think it might be, we have almost certainly seen it before, and we can help you get it back under control. The hardest part is starting. The first step is simply making the call.

Estimate only. This tool gives a rough, plain-language estimate for planning, not an official CRA figure or tax advice. CRA charges interest daily at a prescribed rate that changes every quarter, and penalties vary by program, history, and situation, so your actual balance may differ. How it works

What goes into a CRA balance

Three things usually make up what you owe. Knowing which is which makes the number a lot less intimidating.

The balance

The original tax, GST, or payroll amount that was due. This is the part you can pay down directly.

Arrears interest

Charged daily at CRA's prescribed rate, which changes every quarter. It is not capped, so it keeps growing until the balance is paid.

Penalties

For filing or remitting late. The amount depends on the program and how late you are. Unlike interest, penalties are capped.
