Taxes Owed? A No-Judgment Guide to Payment Arrangements

It happens to the best of us: you finish your return, look at the final line, and the number staring back at you is higher than you expected. In the world of small business, cash flow can be unpredictable, and sometimes the tax bill arrives at a moment when your capital is tied up elsewhere requiring some type of payment arrangements.

If you find yourself in this position as the April 30 deadline approaches, the first thing we want you to do is take a breath. At Numble, we’ve helped many Alberta entrepreneurs navigate this exact situation. It is entirely fixable, and there is a clear, calm path forward.

The Golden Rule: File on Time, No Matter What

If you know you can’t pay your full balance by April 30, your instinct might be to delay filing your return. However, our professionals always recommend the opposite.

Even if you can’t send a single dollar today, file your return by the deadline.

Why? Because filing on time stops the late-filing penalty in its tracks. For 2026, the CRA charges a late-filing penalty of 5% of your balance owing, plus an additional 1% for every month you are late. By simply submitting your paperwork, you protect yourself from that extra 5% charge. Filing also ensures that your essential benefits—like the Canada Child Benefit or the Canada Carbon Rebate—continue to arrive without interruption.

Understanding the Payment Arrangement

If you cannot pay in full, the CRA is often willing to work with you through a Payment Arrangement. This is a formal agreement where you commit to paying your debt over a specific period through a series of smaller, manageable installments.

Setting this up is a proactive step that shows you are acting in good faith. While the CRA will still charge daily compound interest on the unpaid balance (currently prescribed at 7% for the second quarter of 2026), having an arrangement in place can prevent more serious collection actions, such as bank account freezes or salary garnishments.

How to Set Up Your Plan

You don’t always need to call the CRA and wait on hold to start this process. Most small business owners can manage their payments directly through CRA My Business Account or My Account for individuals:

  1. Manage Pre-Authorized Debit (PAD): This is the most common way to set up a plan. You can authorize the CRA to withdraw a specific amount from your bank account on set dates (e.g., the 1st of every month) until the balance is cleared.
  2. The TeleArrangement Service: You can also use the CRA’s automated phone service at 1-866-256-1147. You will need your Social Insurance Number and your latest Notice of Assessment handy.
  3. Third-Party Service Providers: Some owners prefer to use their online banking “Pay Bills” feature to manually send payments every two weeks. Just ensure you are using your SIN or Business Number as the account identifier.

A No-Judgment Zone

At Numble, we know that owing money can feel heavy. Our accountants are here to provide a no-judgment zone where we can look at your numbers together. We can help you calculate a payment amount that fits your actual monthly cash flow, rather than just guessing.

If your financial situation is particularly difficult due to circumstances beyond your control—such as a serious illness or a natural disaster—we can also guide you through the Taxpayer Relief Provisions. This is a request to the CRA to cancel or waive interest and penalties under extraordinary circumstances.

Moving Forward with Confidence

A tax debt is just a hurdle, not a dead end. By filing on time and setting up a manageable plan, you take the power back and keep your business moving forward.

Let’s talk about your options and help you find a manageable way forward. Whether you need help navigating the CRA portal or just want to review your Q2 budget to find some extra room, our professionals are here to be your reliable guide.
